Jared Sidney Torrance
Did you know that Torrance was named after a real person named Jared Sidney Torrance?
"Sidney," as his friends liked to call him, was a Southern California corporate and civic leader. During his lifetime, he was the director of more than 140 corporations. Almost 100 years ago, he had a vision to build a city that was strategically located halfway between Los Angeles and the San Pedro Harbor. At the age of 59, he purchased Rancho Dominguez grazing lands and created a city in which industry, commerce and residential interests would live together in harmony. That city became the City of Torrance, founded in 1912.
